In the heart of the Pacific Ocean lies the volcanic archipelago of Hawaii, made up of nearly 140 small islands. This American territory is overflowing with breathtaking landscapes featuring impressive (still active) volcanoes, turquoise and crystal-clear waters, gigantic cliffs, and lush nature...

Of all the Hawaiian islands, Kauai, Molokai, Oahu, Lanai, Maui, and the Big Island are the main ones. The Big Island is also the largest, and you can discover a variety of stunningly beautiful landscapes!

If you want to visit the archipelago, you are probably wondering when to go to Hawaii. In this article, you will find all the necessary information to choose the best time to travel to Hawaii and to prepare your stay accordingly.

The Climate in Hawaii

The climate in the Hawaiian archipelago is tropical. In fact, the territory has only two seasons: winter (from November to April), where the average temperature is 77°F (25°C), and summer (from May to October), where the average temperature is 86°F (30°C). The climate is, therefore, very pleasant regardless of the month of the year, but it is essentially the amount of rainfall that varies. In summer, rain is relatively rare, and the sun usually shines every day. Winter is the wet season, so it rains much more than in summer, and the sky is also cloudier.

Of course, each island may experience some weather differences, even though they all share similar climatic characteristics overall: areas exposed to the southwest winds are relatively drier and sunnier, while those exposed to the northeast winds are more humid.

What is the Best Season to Go to Hawaii?

Given the information I just provided, you're likely wondering: when is the best time to go to Hawaii? You can travel to Hawaii at any time, but it all depends on the activities you want to do!

Traveling in Summer

As I mentioned earlier, summer is a relatively dry and very sunny season, making it the ideal time for lounging on the beach. Thanks to the high temperatures, you can enjoy swimming, especially since the water temperature in summer averages 79°F (26°C) and is much calmer than in winter. So, if you want to go snorkeling, kayaking, or participate in other water activities, this is the season to choose, although surfers prefer winter to take advantage of the big waves.

To observe certain marine animals like turtles, dolphins, and manta rays, it's also better to travel to Hawaii in summer, as these species prefer calm waters, although you can spot them in winter with a bit of luck.

Summer is also the period when there are the most tourists in Hawaii: the months of June and July see the highest influx. Keep in mind that the closer you get to the peak tourist season, the higher the prices for activities and accommodations will be. If you wish to travel to Hawaii in summer, I recommend September and October, which are among the months with the least tourist influx.

Traveling in Winter

Although rainfall is more abundant in winter, it won't ruin your trip if you plan a trip to Hawaii during this time. Moreover, temperatures remain very pleasant and never drop (or very rarely) below 64°F (18°C). The weather is, however, much cloudier than in summer, but the coasts remain relatively sunny overall.

If you enjoy sports activities like surfing or hiking, I recommend going to Hawaii in winter. The winter waters are turbulent but warm (averaging 77°F or 25°C), providing great surfing sessions. For seasoned hikers and nature lovers, you'll love visiting Hawaii during this season! Waterfalls flow abundantly, rainbows appear, and you'll explore the archipelago in a completely different and unique atmosphere, far from the summer tourist crowd. Additionally, winter is also the ideal season for whale watching

If you're planning a trip to Hawaii in winter, I suggest April and November, which are two other months when tourist traffic is fairly low. Additionally, April is close to summer, so you'll likely enjoy more sunshine and clearer skies.

When to Travel to Hawaii at the Best Price?

To travel to Hawaii at the best price, it is important to prioritize the low tourist season. Therefore, avoid the months of June, July, and August. Generally, the cheapest time to travel to Hawaii is winter, especially in November, February, and March. In summer, the cheapest months are May, September, and October.

I also strongly recommend booking your tickets and all your activities in advance (at least a month ahead or even more) to avoid significant price increases. The airport from which you depart can also affect prices, so compare rates from several airports!

Choosing the right accommodation is very important when organizing a trip, but it's particularly true for a trip to Hawaii, given that it is generally quite an expensive destination. You can reduce the cost of your stay by staying in hostels or renting a condo, for example!

Finally, the price also depends on the island you are visiting, so be sure to compare prices based on the islands! Then, I recommend staying on one island because visiting multiple islands can be extremely expensive and will take up a lot of time traveling instead of enjoying your vacation. However, if you really want to visit other Hawaiian islands, you can prioritize the ferry over flying. Additionally, day trips often offer visits to other islands and may cost less than if you organize this yourself.

That's all for this article; I hope you now have all the necessary information to choose the best time to travel to Hawaii
