As one of the largest student cities in France, Toulouse is a vibrant metropolis with a rich cultural and historical heritage! From the Basilica of Saint-Sernin, the Canal du Midi, to the famous Capitole, many visits await you, but first, you need to find the right accommodation! If you already know when to go to Toulouse and what activities to do, finding a place to stay is a crucial step to ensure your plans go smoothly. It is one of the most attractive cities in the country, with many interested but few available options, so this guide is here to help you find a place to sleep in Toulouse
How to Find Accommodation in Toulouse?
Although Toulouse is one of the largest cities in France, it is quite saturated in terms of housing, with high demand and low availability. This situation has led to a rise in rental prices, including nightly rates for hotels!
Additionally, keep in mind that Toulouse is a very dynamic student city, which may add an extra challenge in the search for accommodation... Therefore, I strongly recommend visiting Toulouse during the off-season or booking several weeks/months in advance to secure the best rates.
Apartment rentals, private rooms with locals, hotels of all ranges, guesthouses... You will find a little bit of everything in Toulouse, but it's up to you to decide based on your budget, especially if you are looking for accommodation as central as possible; you should budget at least $100 per night for two people.

Where to Sleep in Toulouse? Downtown, the Best Option!
Downtown Toulouse, nicknamed the Pink City due to the distinctive color of its bricks, offers a true blend of history, culture, and modernity! It is certainly the best neighborhood you can choose for a stay in the metropolis and to peacefully enjoy the Toulouse lifestyle...
Among the elements in the heart of Toulouse, the Capitole Square is a must-visit, with its imposing town hall, shops, cafes, and restaurants. Not far away is the Basilica of Saint Sernin, a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site!
Of course, you won't miss the chance to stroll along the picturesque banks of the Garonne, particularly on the Quai de la Daurade, the oldest bridge in Toulouse... Culturally, the Museum of Augustins or the Fine Arts Museum of Toulouse offers remarkable collections of Romanesque art and sculptures.
Staying in downtown Toulouse will also place you close to iconic neighborhoods like Saint-Cyprien, across the Garonne, known for its bohemian atmosphere and its covered market! Here you will find Les Abattoirs, a museum featuring exhibitions from after World War II.

Saint-Cyprien, the Most Dynamic Neighborhood in Toulouse
Located on the left bank of the Garonne, west of downtown, the Saint-Cyprien neighborhood is an iconic area. Known for its friendliness and dynamic atmosphere, it is filled with charming little streets, lively squares, and a wide variety of activities to do and places to see!
Sleeping in Saint-Cyprien is an excellent choice. You can easily reach downtown by crossing the Pont Neuf, a 220-meter long road bridge with 7 arches dating back to 1632. The Pont Saint Pierre will allow you to quickly access Capitole Square and the Jacobins Convent.
The Saint-Cyprien neighborhood is highly appreciated for its authentic atmosphere, characterized by food markets and Indian shops. It also has a strong student community which comes to spend time in the cafes and bars around Place Olivier! Mentioned earlier, the medieval museum of Les Abattoirs is located to the north, as well as the Prairie des Filtres, a public park along the banks of the Garonne.
As one of the oldest neighborhoods in Toulouse, Saint-Cyprien has much charm! It is not a very large area, but it is one of the best places to settle. Housing options are not as numerous as in downtown, so do not waste too much time on booking...

If you are looking for accommodation in this area, you will be making a good choice. Do not hesitate to extend your search to the nearby neighborhoods of Saint-Etienne and Le Busca. Closely adjacent to Les Carmes, they house attractions such as the Botanical Garden, which has play areas and medicinal plants, the Toulouse Museum, the Royal Garden dating back to 1750, the famous Grand Rond park, as well as the University of Toulouse.
Overall, Les Carmes is an excellent neighborhood to stay in Toulouse, but book as soon as possible...

Where to Sleep Near Matabiau Train Station in Toulouse?
Although other neighborhoods are interesting, particularly Saint-Michel for its youthful and student atmosphere, sleeping near the Matabiau train station and downtown is, in my opinion, one of the best choices.
This is because the Matabiau area offers a very wide variety of available accommodations, along with many shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, and stores of all kinds. Ideally, I recommend targeting your searches around the square connecting the streets of Bayard, Belfort, and Stalingrad. This area, in particular, has plenty of places to stay in Toulouse for all budgets.
To me, the best area to focus on is Bayard Street. It is a long shopping artery stretching from the Toulouse Matabiau train station to Boulevard de Strasbourg in less than 10 minutes on foot. Once here, you will only need to walk a few more minutes to reach downtown or the basilica.
If you are on a budget or just passing through Toulouse for a night or two, sleeping in the Matabiau neighborhood is the best option. Although areas surrounding train stations are often deemed less favorable, the ambiance here is not necessarily unpleasant, but do not linger too late at night.
Where to Sleep in Toulouse Near Matabiau Train Station?
The Hotel des Ambassadeurs is a great address to remember for budget travelers! For €67 / night, this 2-star hotel offers simply decorated yet comfortable and well-equipped rooms. The on-site staff is very attentive, you will stay on a shopping street just 200 meters from the train station!
The Hotel La Chartreuse is located just a few steps from the train station and offers comfortable rooms with modern décor. Starting at €82 per night, this establishment is run by a friendly team and offers an ideal location near cafes, shops, and restaurants located near the station.
What is the Best Season to Visit Toulouse?
Ideally, I recommend visiting Toulouse between April and September, when the temperatures are pleasant for exploring the city on foot. However, it is preferable to target spring and early autumn to take advantage of good rates and ensure you find available accommodation!
During these two seasons, the weather is often mild, with gentle temperatures. During the summer season, Toulouse can get very hot, exceeding 30 degrees Celsius! This is not necessarily the most favorable time if you have a tight budget or if you dislike the crowds and heat.
How to Get to Toulouse?
If you have a rental car or your own vehicle, driving to Toulouse is an excellent option! It will offer you more autonomy and freedom to explore the surrounding areas, especially if you're just passing through... But it can be impractical, as traffic in Toulouse is very dense!
On the other hand, booking a train ticket to Toulouse is a popular choice! The Toulouse Matabiau train station is served by many lines from major cities in France, often at attractive prices. As mentioned in this guide, the station is near downtown, so you'll be able to move around easily.
Finally, one last option is available: flying to Toulouse. Toulouse-Blagnac Airport is well-served by national and international flights! Although the airport is located outside the beltway, the Tisseo airport shuttle connects it to Matabiau station in 25 minutes, costing around €9 per person.
