When to go to Sardinia?
Sardinia is a great choice for a vacation, whether you're looking to relax or engage in sports! You can admire and enjoy the Mediterranean Sea, its many attractions, and its delicious cuisine. However, it is essential to know the best time to go to Sardinia based on your desires and needs! That's why I'll explain, season by season, the must-see spots, as well as the events you shouldn't miss and the budget to prepare for depending on the time you choose.
What is the best time to discover Sardinia?
After asking yourself where to go in Sardinia, you've surely wondered when to go to Sardinia? Since this island is primarily a beach destination, summer is the preferred time to enjoy its crystal-clear waters This means from June to September, although the water can be cooler in June and September, you'll be able to enjoy it more thoroughly since the high tourist season is mainly in July and August.
If you only want to admire the Mediterranean from a high peak during a hike rather than diving in, I recommend visiting between mid-September and May. Indeed, there will be fewer tourists, and it won't be too hot yet.
But don't worry, if you don't come in summer, the temperatures will still be pleasant because even winter is quite mild, with temperatures generally not dropping below 10 degrees.
When to go to Sardinia based on the weather?
Summer
Summer is definitely the time that may entice you most, given that Sardinia is primarily a beach destination ☀️, but it all depends on what you plan to do during your vacation! It's important to note that between July and August is peak season.
On the other hand, it's ideal for a relaxing vacation as Sardinia boasts beautiful beaches worthy of the finest islands, and rain is very rare. You can expect temperatures of at least 30 degrees all summer long ️.
This is also a great chance to go dolphin watching during a boat tour! You can only see them in summer, so take advantage of it! This dolphin-watching excursion in Golfo Aranci during an eco-friendly boat tour will only cost you €35.
Autumn
If you don't plan to swim, autumn can be a very good time to visit Sardinia because you'll find a very pleasant climate with temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees, perfect for outdoor activities! Plus, you won't be bothered by crowds since tourist traffic gradually decreases until winter arrives. Overall, autumn is fantastic if you want to enjoy outdoor activities without too many people around .
To still enjoy the sea without having to swim, this activity is perfect! This kayak trip to observe dolphins is possible until early December and resumes again in early April. Just a reminder, the best time to observe dolphins is from May to September, but you could get lucky and see some beyond this period, and if not, you can always console yourself with the appetizers that conclude this 3-hour activity for €45 per person.
When to go to Sardinia? Why not in winter!
If you want to escape from the winter gloom, Sardinia during this time is a good idea as winters are particularly mild! One might think there's nothing to do in winter in Sardinia, but think again: Christmas markets, excursions, and exploring tourist sites... From December to February, you'll enjoy sunshine almost every day with only about one rainy day a week on average and temperatures often exceeding 10 degrees. If you head to the mountainous areas of Sardinia, you might even get to enjoy snowfall ❄️.
Of course, it's a good destination for a sunny getaway, but in winter, don't expect to relax in the water unless you enjoy cold water since it rarely exceeds 15 degrees! But after all, would you dare to take a midnight swim on New Year's Eve in Sardinia? .
Since winter is the coldest time, I've found an indoor activity for you, which you can also do during other seasons! It's a walking tour of the underground in Cagliari where you'll travel through time to uncover the history of the capital, after which you can choose between a guided tour of the old town or a food and wine tasting for €30 per person.
When to go to Sardinia? In spring
Spring is, in my opinion, a very good compromise for going to Sardinia! Just like autumn, there aren't too many crowds since it's the mid-tourist season, and temperatures are pleasant without being extreme, so it's perfect for discovering cultural sites outdoors and enjoying nature during a hike without overheating.
In the northeastern part of the island, specifically in Olbia, you'll have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the Gallura vineyard with tasting for €50 per person . You'll discover the secrets behind its delicious wines and judge for yourself by tasting them . This activity is ideal in spring as the weather is nice but not too hot for spending an afternoon under the sun!
You can even admire the blooming countryside during your strolls! Temperatures will be around 20 degrees, but to enjoy the sea, you'll have to wait until mid-May, unless you love swimming in cold water!
When to go to Sardinia to experience unmissable events?
The Mamuthones Carnival
On January 17, we celebrate the Mamuthones Carnival, one of the most famous carnivals in Sardinia! You'll find lively streets filled with locals dressed as Mamuthones, wearing quite scary wooden masks! This carnival celebrates the feast of San'Antonio Abate and Mardi Gras. If you wish to attend, you'll need to go to the center of the island in Mamoiada.
The Sartiglia
The Sartiglia is a centuries-old tradition where several horse races are organized, established during the period of Spanish domination. You can witness it between February 23 and 25 in Oristano, on the west of the island. You will find around 120 masked and costumed riders along with the main figure, the Su Componidori, a half-human, half-deity figure under a terracotta mask .
Holy Week
In Sardinia, religion plays a significant role, which is why many religious events take place! If you wish to witness Holy Week, you'll need to come between March and April depending on the year. You can participate in the processions and pay tribute to the passion of Christ. ⛪️
Sant'Efisio
The Sant'Efisio is one of the most impressive events! From May 1, from Cagliari to Nora, you can join the locals to follow the procession of carts accompanied by faithful escorting the statue of Sant'Efisio for more than 80 km.
The Corsa degli scalzi, the Barefoot Race
The Barefoot Race is a rather unique race that celebrates the bravery of young men from the village of San Salvatore di Sinis who had to evacuate their village under siege in 1506 before returning to retrieve the statue of San Salvatore. You'll see thousands of young men gather barefoot every year on the first weekend of September in Cabras, in the west of the island, wearing white pants and carrying the statue to the village sanctuary.
Autumn in Barbagia
Finally, from September to December, you can attend the famous event Autumn in Barbagia to discover all the Sardinian gastronomy ️, a perfect event for food lovers! It's an opportunity to explore the island's customs through exhibitions, conferences, and shows taking place during this period!
When to go to Sardinia at the best price?
When asking about the best time to go to Sardinia, the costs of the trip also come to mind! Depending on the season, they will be higher or lower, so here are the price ranges for the main expenses: accommodation, car, and flights.
The cost of accommodation
Regarding accommodation prices, it depends on the period you come: in high season, prices will be higher, and vice versa. For a limited budget, you'll find the best deals from October to April! To find the best prices throughout the year, I recommend booking your accommodation on Booking.com! To give you an idea of prices, in low season you can easily find accommodations for under €100 per night, while in high season you should expect from €150 and up.

Budget for car rental
Car rental in Sardinia is almost mandatory to explore the island's beautiful spots during a road trip in Sardinia! Unless you bring your personal car on the ferry. To find the best car rental offers, I suggest researching on DiscoverCars, which aggregates several sites and allows you to find the best prices quickly. In high season, expect about €80 per day compared to €30 to €50 in low season.
When to go to Sardinia based on flight prices
As for flight prices, I really recommend comparing offers on Ulysse, where you can find the best rates! ✈️ From France, you should expect between €150 and €500 depending on the season. That's why using a platform to compare prices will help you find the best deals, especially if you're flexible!
