Visiting Park Güell is undoubtedly the most iconic attraction in Barcelona, with 3.5 million visitors each year. This stunning Catalan architectural work designed by Antoni Gaudi is located on Muntanya Pelada, a hill north of the Gracia neighborhood. From the park, you can enjoy a spectacular view of Barcelona, so impressive that the park is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site!

The story of the park begins with Eusebi Güell's desire to create a residential neighborhood for the Barcelona elite, with no less than 60 homes in a calm and breathtaking setting... Construction began in 1900 under the guidance of Antoni Gaudi and was completed in 1914, revealing forms and a modernist architecture that is the unique signature of the architect... Every curve and structure will leave you speechless...

A visit to Park Güell is therefore essential, and you can explore 17 hectares discovering sculptures, columns, colorful ceramic mosaics, geometric shapes, and irregular forms typical of Catalan modernist architecture by Gaudi... By the way, I recommend carefully choosing when to visit Barcelona since Park Güell is highly sought after

Is access to Park Güell free or paid?

In the collective mindset, many people think visiting Park Güell is free, and that is not entirely false. To remind you, the initial project was to create a residential neighborhood, but after 14 years of construction, only two houses were sold, and the project fell through. It was after this failure that the park was given to the city of Barcelona, which transformed it into a popular tourist attraction

Park Güell has two entrances, the main one being located to the south. You can recognize it by its two houses with colorful mosaic-covered roofs, typically Gaudi's style. By passing through here, you will enter the regulated (i.e., paid) part of the park where all the must-see monuments are located ️ As for the rest of the park, it features beautiful gardens, a viewpoint, and a viaduct accessible for free and only to residents of Barcelona

Access to the entirety of the park is paid for all tourists

Park Güell can accommodate visitors every day from 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM. Note that if you choose the 7:30 PM time slot, you can visit the park until 8:00 PM. Access is highly regulated, with only 400 people allowed on site every 30 minutes to make the visit more pleasant and peaceful

So be sure to select a time slot that works for you, ideally in the morning! If you plan to visit Park Güell in winter, it would be worthwhile to admire the sunset for an exceptional experience

Although the entrance ticket is cheaper when bought on site, it is preferable to reserve the ticket online before your arrival in Barcelona. Trust me, you will save a lot of time as the line at the entrance of Park Güell is very long, and you may wait several hours ⏱️ It's best to pay a few extra euros for quick access to the tourist site; here are the different tickets available:

  • Entrance ticket Park Güell: $13

  • Park Güell and Gaudí house tour: $18

How to get to Park Güell?

Since the attraction is located on a hill, public transportation is likely a viable option to reach Park Güell. Here are several options you can consider to save time:

  • By metro, take line 3 to the stations Lesseps or Vallcarca. Once you arrive, you will walk about 15 minutes to reach the escalators leading up the hill.
  • By bus, get off at the La Granja stop via lines H6, D40, 92, and 24. There is also the Trav de Dalt-Torrent de les Flors stop serviced by lines H6 and D40.
  • The tourist bus is also an option to get to Park Güell! For $33, you can take the Barcelona City Tour line that stops at the top of the park. You will then need to walk to the main entrance, which is not far from there. The hardest part will already be done in any case!

Once on site, be sure to head to the main entrance of the park. It is located on Carretera del Carmel, where the ticket office is situated. If you have any doubts, know that there is another entrance located on Carrer Marianao, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. After your visit, you will exit via Carrer Olot.

Now that you know everything about opening hours, prices, and the different means of access, you are probably wondering what there is to see at Park Güell? In this section, you will discover all the monuments accessible in the regulated area of the park, which are the most popular attractions:

  • The Dragon Staircase is the first thing you will see upon entering the park. Although its name evokes that of a monster, one might even think it's a salamander! In any case, you can admire this beautiful creature covered in mosaics, Gaudi's signature, three snakes, and an emblem representing Catalonia. It is a true artistic marvel!
  • The Hypostyle Room is distinguished by its exceptional beauty and impressive architecture. You can admire a ceiling built with domes covered in mosaics, supported by 86 thick columns sculpted to perfection. When you head to the terrace of this room, you will see the iconic undulating and colorful benches offering breathtaking views of Barcelona...
  • The Nature Square is simply the terrace of the Hypostyle Room. This is where you can admire the undulating benches lining the edge of the square. Contrary to what one might think, these benches were designed by Josep Maria Jujol to watch plays. In fact, this square was intended to serve as a natural theater, offering a superb view of the city in return!

These three elements make up the regulated area of Gaudi's park! They are indescribably beautiful, and you will be amazed by each of these discoveries. While keeping an eye on the 30-minute visit, take your time capturing beautiful photos and soaking in the park's architecture...

But the visit doesn't stop there, as there are other monuments to see outside of the regulated area:

  • The Austrian Gardens area was initially constructed to accommodate lodging! But due to the failure of Antoni Gaudi's project, it was transformed into a nursery before being converted into splendid gardens housing vegetation given to Barcelona by Austria.
  • Casa Trias is one of the two houses sold after the construction of Park Güell. Its neat and elegant architecture is quite admirable. It was bought by Marti Trias, the lawyer of the Güell family, and is not accessible to the general public. This private residence still belongs to the family and has become iconic! It does, however, offer an exceptional view of Barcelona!
  • The Gaudí House Museum is a show house built to welcome visitors wishing to potentially build a home within the park. After the urbanization project failed, it became the residence of Antoni Gaudi and his family for a little over 20 years.

When to visit Park Güell in Barcelona?

This tourist attraction is highly sought after every day and throughout the year, so expect to see many people within the park. However, to better enjoy this activity, it is advisable to plan your visit in the morning or late in the day during winter to admire the sunset. The latter option is highly recommended since winter in Barcelona attracts fewer tourists!
