Where to stay in Papeete?

Nestled between the ocean and mountains, Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, is a vibrant city bustling with lively avenues, all kinds of shops, and great places to eat and drink. Are you planning to stay for a while to soak in the energy and discover the gems of this charming port city? You'll need a place to stay in Papeete. Read on to discover the neighborhoods to focus on and interesting lodging options.

Why look for accommodation in Papeete?

To start with, it must be said that Papeete is not necessarily the ideal city to settle into right away during a trip to Tahiti. Yes, we come to French Polynesia primarily to enjoy its beautiful beaches and stunning landscapes, things that are not always found in Papeete...

That being said, the capital is not completely devoid of advantages. For example, it serves as a central starting point for your various activities - excursions and cruises. Moreover, the city is fairly well-connected, and you shouldn't have too much trouble getting around between attractions. Speaking of attractions, there are a few interesting ones in Papeete, such as the beautiful cathedral.

On the accommodation side, it's worth noting that the offerings are extensive. I would even say that you will find the most varied options on the island. All budgets should thus find something suitable. If you're not sure yet where to stay in Tahiti, I especially recommend Papeete for a short stay. After that, you can always look for where to settle elsewhere to get closer to the Tahitian treasures

Downtown: A Lively Neighborhood

Papeete is a charming city, and you will quickly see this as you wander its neighborhoods. Its downtown area is the most vibrant. Adorned with street art, its streets are home to tourist attractions, some centered around culture and history, while others focus on gastronomy. In other words, it's the ideal area to stay in Papeete if you want to be at the heart of the action, both day and night.

Among its key sites, you will find:

To explore more of Papeete's gems, consider joining a guided tour of its vibrant downtown for about €53/person

Besides attractions, you will be close to essential services, not to mention shops, banks, pharmacies, and transportation methods, including buses and taxis. Furthermore, the port of Papeete is very near downtown. You'll have easy access to ferries in case you need to take this type of transport

Staying downtown in Papeete is an exhilarating experience. However, given its bustling nature, it's not the area I would recommend for vacationers seeking tranquility.

  • The Papeete market, a huge covered market where you can buy local products and taste the flavors of Papeete.
  • The lovely Vai'été Square, a pleasant relaxation spot under palm trees Go there to mingle with locals, listen to street musicians, and watch the sunset over the ocean.
  • Bougainville Park, a beautiful wooded area to stroll in nature and explore Papeete's history through various monuments.
  • The Town Hall will impress you with its grand luxury facade worthy of a royal palace.
  • The Bora Bora Lounge offers a glimpse of Papeete's lively nightlife with happy hours, karaoke, and music concerts

Paofai: A Neighborhood Close to the Waterfront

Paofai Papeete

Paofai is a great neighborhood to stay in Papeete, especially if you love the ocean It is only 1.5 km from downtown, making for about a 5-minute drive and a 20-minute walk. Yet, it is quieter, especially in the evening. And while there are fewer restaurants and shops than in downtown, there are still options nearby! This is why couples, families, and retirees particularly enjoy Paofai

Its proximity to the waterfront also attracts vacationers. In fact, there are stunning views of Tahiti's lagoon from certain spots like Paofai Gardens, a family-friendly site, probably the most popular in the neighborhood. From there, you can see Moorea, Tahiti's neighboring island, quite well. Above all, it is an enchanting green space where people come to relax on the lawn or by the pond. It also features sports facilities, picnic areas, and playgrounds for the little ones. In short, a real epicenter of relaxation!

Staying in Paofai allows you to be close to other beautiful places to visit:

In summary, Paofai is close to the vibrancy of downtown but far enough to provide a serene vacation. I find it to be the perfect neighborhood for diving into the everyday life of Polynesians. Its greenery enhances its relaxing ambiance. Furthermore, its accommodation options are diverse enough to meet the varied needs of travelers, ranging from nature lodges to large hotel complexes, making it one of the best places to stay in Papeete, even for those on a budget

  • The waterfront, a nice area bordered by a promenade and palm trees
  • The Siloama temple of Paofai, a splendid Protestant church.
  • The Robert Wan Pearl Museum, a cultural site dedicated to pearls and the art of turning them into jewelry.

La Mission: A Residential Neighborhood

Papeete Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

La Mission is a charming residential neighborhood where houses are nestled among greenery. Just like Paofai, it is not too far from downtown Papeete. Thus, despite its peaceful atmosphere, it remains close to the essentials for daily life. What really sets this neighborhood apart is the concentration of Catholic places of worship found here. In fact, it is home to one of the most beautiful monuments in Papeete: the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, prized for its magnificent 19th-century French colonial architecture.

This grand building marks the area of La Mission, which then extends along Rue Mgr Tepano Jaussen. In addition to this one, you can admire the sublime Chapel of the Sacred Heart and the surprising parish of Maria-No-te-Hau, two other must-sees.

Apart from its religious buildings, the La Mission neighborhood doesn't have much to offer its visitors. Vacationers often stay here mainly for its tranquility and proximity to downtown.
