Want to plan a vacation to see the most beautiful castles in the world? In that case, I encourage you to head to Bavaria to visit Neuschwanstein Castle, located about a hundred kilometers from Munich. It is undoubtedly one of the best activities to do during a stay in Germany Having heavily influenced pop culture, notably the architecture of Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle, this medieval structure has a rich and impressive history. But before preparing for the visit, knowing where to stay near Neuschwanstein Castle is an essential element for a more relaxing vacation...
Why visit Neuschwanstein Castle?
Neuschwanstein Castle is an architectural masterpiece that perfectly embodies Romanticism of the 14th century. Its construction was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and designed by architect Eduard Riedel, beginning in 1869 and continuing for nearly two decades!
The castle is perched atop a hill, offering stunning views of the Bavarian Alps and the surrounding valleys. Its architecture was inspired by Wagner's operas, serving as a personal retreat for Ludwig II, a place where he could immerse himself in his fantastical world.
As you explore the interior of Neuschwanstein Castle, you will observe sumptuous decorations, period furniture, artworks including murals inspired by fairy tales and Germanic mythology, luxurious elements, and various rooms ranging from bedrooms to kitchens.
However, the premature death of Ludwig II in 1886 interrupted the castle's construction. Although some architectural elements were never completed, Neuschwanstein quickly became a major tourist attraction that attracts many people wishing to admire this picturesque building!
Today, Neuschwanstein Castle remains one of Germany's most iconic sites and one of the must-visit places in Bavaria. It is worth noting that this medieval structure heavily inspired the creation of the castle seen in Sleeping Beauty, and even at Disneyland.
