Nature and Art on the Most Beautiful Peninsula of the Baltic
Baltic Sea, here we are! On the Fischland-Darss-Zingst peninsula, we walked through colorful villages lined with dunes, between waves, nature reserves, and artworks. I can picture sunrises and sunsets by the sea, a bright blue sky, bike rides amidst the pines... and a big smile on my face as I remember the joy we felt exploring this peninsula, renowned as the most beautiful in Germany.
Small islands turned peninsula
Our road trip continues: after leaving Lübeck and dipping our toes in the sea at Travemünde and Timmendorfer Strand, we are now heading onto a strip of land in the Baltic Sea. Originally a chain of independent islands, it has become this 45 km long peninsula through the work of ocean currents patiently carrying sand to connect the islands together.
Today, this peninsula offers travelers a variety of landscapes: soft sandy beaches, grasslands with tall grasses, marshes, a natural park with wind-tossed trees, cliffs... In two days, it's hard to see everything, but we can already get a great overview. Preferring to immerse ourselves in natural landscapes, we only briefly passed through its main towns, Prerow, Ahrenshoop, Wustrow, and Zingst. Here are our four big favorites on this beautiful peninsula.
Fischland-Darss-Zingst in 4 Highlights
Ahrenshoop, Art and Nature
Another colony of artists! While the landscapes are very different from those of Worpswede, it's easy to understand why they attracted so many painters. The dunes smoothed by the wind, the cliffs overlooking golden sandy beaches, the frothy sea... the landscapes are alive! Even the most daydreaming of walkers might be tempted to capture their movement in a canvas or a photograph.
If you get the chance, walk the art trail recommended by the Tourist Office. We explored a bit of it and it offered us stunning views of the beach and typical houses peeking out from behind the dunes. Special mention for the view from the Grenzweg platform, one of the finest in the region.
A little further south of Grenzweg, between Ahrenshoop and Wustrow, lies our second favorite view of the region: the steep banks. Overlooking the beach and the sea, it's the ideal spot for a walk on foot or by bike, to observe the swallows nesting in the cliffside, and above all, to admire the sunset.
Darsser Ort Natureum
After enjoying the beach from the dunes, we climb a bit higher to admire the waves from the Darsser Ort lighthouse. The climb to the top at 35 meters and the view of the beach alone are worth the trip, but that's not all this place has to offer.
I really enjoyed walking on the wooden walkways through the national park. First among the dunes, then through marshes and forests of pines and beeches, the trail gives visitors a great overview of the diversity of landscapes, flora, and fauna. In the distance, we were lucky enough to spot a herd of deer peacefully grazing at the forest's edge. And bird lovers, like François, are in paradise here: over 160 species have been recorded in this national park!
Practical information This site is not accessible by car. We rented bikes in Prerow; the bike ride from the town through the forest to the beach is very pleasant. A wonderful way to gradually immerse ourselves in these coastal natural landscapes.
Darsser West beach
After loading the bikes for a little ride, we are back in the saddle to explore a part of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park with the Darsser West beach. A very pleasant ride on a bike path that ends with the wheels in the sand. All that remains is to bury our toes and enjoy one of the most iconic views of the peninsula: the tree lying on the beach, seemingly forever waiting for the tide to return.
Zingst, Nature and Photography in Harmony
After starting by telling you about the artist colony of Ahrenshoop, let's return to art with Zingst. This town charmed us from the very first moments. There's a gentle aura, especially in the evening with golden lights licking the wooden facades.
I remember strolling on the beach, leaving the walkway behind to walk along the shore, admiring the last rays of the sun reflected on the sea... and the artworks. Like the giant sunglasses, seemingly inviting us to take the time to simply appreciate the beauty of the moment.
Our love for Zingst is also and especially because of its artistic and photographic approach. The town has now become a reference point for photography, with events bringing together specialists and amateurs from around the world, exhibitions open to all in the streets and even on the beach, a museum (Max Hünten Haus Zingst), and activities throughout the year... In short, Zingst is the town for photography lovers.
The theme of this year's exhibition, focused on environmental protection, particularly appealed to us.
Practical information The Max Hünten Haus Zingst photography museum is freely accessible. In addition to exhibitions and workshops, it offers a photo equipment rental service to test different cameras and lenses. You can also easily print your photos on-site.
Our Recommendations in Fischland-Darss-Zingst
Accommodations
Haus Linden
Our first hotel labeled veggie! What a pleasure to see initiatives like this developing! What a joy to have a completely vegetarian (and partially vegan) breakfast buffet, with so many choices and local flavors to savor.
Haus 54
Restaurants and Cafés
Kaffeemühle
A pleasant sweet break in Ahrenshoop at this mill converted into a café.
Zum Strandlaeufer
The restaurant in this hotel in Ahrenshoop, while it doesn't have a vegan menu, offers vegetarian dishes on its menu and can make adjustments upon request.
Kurhausrestaurant
A very nice restaurant in Zingst, both for its setting, service, and view of the pier, as well as for its family-friendly atmosphere. The restaurant does not have a vegetarian or vegan menu, but can adapt existing dishes upon request.
Between Sea, Nature Reserves, and Art
I hope these few highlights in words and photos have conveyed the enthusiasm we felt exploring this beautiful peninsula. Diverse and rejuvenating natural landscapes, warm encounters, walks through forests and along the sea that will leave us with beautiful images in our minds... That's a little of what we take away from this part of our road trip in northern Germany.
Now, I just have to tell you about the last region we visited: the islands of Rügen and Hiddensee... To be continued!
And if you missed it, here's our video from this beautiful trip. We hope you enjoy it!
