The third largest city in the United States, Chicago is a Midwestern city in Illinois, located over 1,000 kilometers from New York, on the shores of Lake Michigan, near the Canadian border. Let me tell you right away, winters are very cold, much like in Canada, but that doesn't mean that winter will be a bad time to visit this charming city. So, when is the best time to visit Chicago? I'll attempt to answer that question for you
What is the best season to visit Chicago?
Chicago has a humid continental climate due to its proximity to Lake Michigan. Winters are cold and snowy, with temperatures often dropping below freezing and bitter winds. Fortunately, there are plenty of indoor activities in Chicago.
In the summer, it is hot and humid. Indeed, during summer, rainfall is most intense, particularly in the late afternoon. However, this won't prevent you from enjoying a lot of outdoor activities during the day.
In spring and autumn, you'll enjoy beautiful days that are less humid, though it can rain occasionally in the spring. Tourists generally choose autumn, in September and October, to visit Chicago. Depending on the year, you might even benefit from Indian summer in Chicago by the shores of Lake Michigan. You will feel like you're in paradise.
In any case, there isn't a truly bad season to visit Chicago, as events are held throughout the year. This is what we will discover in the rest of the article

Activities to Do in Spring in Chicago
Spring in Chicago offers pleasant living conditions, but spring can sometimes take its time to settle in for good. To ensure enjoyable weather, wait until May for your trip, especially if you plan on outdoor activities like a cruise on Lake Michigan.
Before that, late March and early April can still see some snowfall, and the wind from the lake remains cold. Therefore, prioritize indoor activities; Chicago is full of cultural visits, counting dozens of museums. The most famous include:
If you are specifically coming for the museums because of your passion for art, spring (like any season) will be ideal for your stay, and I recommend taking advantage of a tourist pass to save money on your various tickets.

When to Visit Chicago? In Autumn, of Course
As I mentioned, autumn is the favorite season for tourists, as this is when the foot traffic is highest for all activities, whether outdoors or indoors. The weather is still pleasant and much less humid, thus there are very few rainfalls in September, October, and early November. Still, prepare warm clothes for the mornings and evenings when it can sometimes get chilly.
This is the famous Indian summer; to enjoy it, don't just stay in downtown Chicago, head to the shores of Lake Michigan to experience nature adorned in orange hues. Of course, the phenomenon isn't as visible as in Montreal or San Francisco, but believe me, it's worth the detour if you visit Chicago in the fall.
The unmissable event during this travel-friendly period is the city's jazz festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival. It usually takes place in August or early September and lasts 4 days over the Labor Day weekend, which this year falls on September 4. To attend, head to Millennium Park in the heart of the city
Visiting Chicago in Summer
If you want to escape the extreme heat and European heat waves in summer, Chicago will also charm you in summer where temperatures rarely exceed 86°F. However, be prepared for thunderstorms in the late afternoon, which means you might not be able to enjoy drinks with friends on a bar terrace in the evening.
For the less cold-sensitive, you can again head to the shores of Lake Michigan for a leisurely cruise or this time, to swim in waters between 64°F and 68°F.
Occasionally, temperatures can approach 95°F or higher; global warming is indeed affecting the whole world...
Two events take place in Chicago during the summer months, which also increases tourist traffic. Of course, there is the trendy music festival Lollapalooza (which also takes place in Paris) held at Grant Park. In 2023, the festival took place from August 3 to 6, featuring artists such as Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Lana Del Rey.
Alternatively, you can also attend the Taste of Chicago, a culinary festival that has been held annually every July since 1980 in Chicago. You can discover all of American cuisine, particularly street food, including pizzas , hot dogs , and much more. There are also activities for the whole family
Activities in Chicago in Winter
In winter in Chicago, it is very cold, and as I mentioned, the temperatures are often below freezing, generally between 23°F and 14°F, and can sometimes even reach -22°F . Snow falls and ice storms are frequent.
Nevertheless, you can still participate in some must-do activities, such as ice skating on Lake Michigan, provided you bring your warmest clothes and are well-equipped. In December, visit the city's Christmas markets, especially Christkindlmarkt, inspired by Christmas markets in Germany, and warm up with some mulled wine.
For events, I also recommend those who are basketball fans, particularly of the NBA, to visit Chicago during this period. Indeed, there is a break between each season during the summer months; in September, the championship resumes, but the first games are highly sought after, and from April to June, during the playoffs and finals, tickets are exorbitantly priced. So, definitely choose winter to support the Chicago Bulls
When to Go to Chicago? Planning Your Trip
After booking your stay during the period that suits you best, don't forget to take care of some mandatory administrative procedures for traveling to the United States. For example, don't forget to apply for an ESTA to be authorized to enter the country at the airport.
It's an online form you must fill out. Once approved, you will need to print the certificate to present at customs. Beware, ESTA validation can sometimes take a few weeks, so be sure to do it at least 2 months before your travel dates Don't be too early either, so it remains valid.
Also, check the expiration date of your passport (required for traveling to the USA) and make sure it is valid for 6 months after your return.
