If you're unsure about what to do in Crete, I highly recommend taking a trip to Chania, a must-visit destination in Greece. This city has a rich cultural and historical heritage with many sites to explore. To ensure a pleasant stay, it's important to know where to sleep in Chania This guide is here to help you make the right decision, so without further ado, let's discover the best neighborhoods and accommodations to settle in Chania!

To determine the best location for your stay in Chania, it is essential to familiarize yourself with the city and its various neighborhoods. The city itself isn't extremely large, and most accommodations are concentrated in the old town and around the Venetian harbor

Moreover, the New Town, outside the walls of the Old Town, also hosts many establishments ranging from hotels of all types to rental homes and guesthouses. It won't be very complicated to find a place to stay, as long as you know what you're looking for

In this guide, I'll help you explore the most interesting neighborhoods. Most of them are really close to each other, sometimes even adjacent, but each neighborhood has its own vibe and history, and you'll see there's something for everyone!

Although Chania is a slightly less touristy city than Heraklion, for example, it's important to book your nights as soon as possible. Crete remains a tourist island with thousands of travelers each year, so don't wait too long!

In the center of Chania, Konmari Boutique Suites offers modern and bright rooms starting at €62 per night. Ideal for a romantic getaway, you can even enjoy a private jacuzzi!

If you have a bigger budget and want to enjoy a few days in the upscale Halepa neighborhood, Lagon Life Spirit Boutique Hotel offers luxurious suites with a private pool and balcony starting at €167 per night.

If you're looking for a hotel by the sea in Chania, the neighborhoods of Kastelli and the Venetian harbor are two areas you should consider. One represents the old town located on a hill, offering beautiful views of the ocean, while the other provides a pleasant seaside setting

Overall, these two areas are both interesting for a wonderful vacation. The old town and the Venetian harbor are adjacent, so distance should not be a concern. In terms of accommodation, you'll find many small hotels catering to all budgets.

The old town of Chania is steeped in history and culture with a tumultuous past due to the damage caused by World War II bombings. During its renovation, remains of a Byzantine fortress dating back to the Minoan era were found by archaeologists.

When you venture towards the Venetian Harbor of Chania, you'll enjoy a stunning waterfront perfect for walks! The harbor features unique architecture, in an arc shape, lined with beautiful Venetian houses that have colorful facades, perfect for taking photos!

Among the sites to visit, the Maritime Museum of Chania is worth a quick stop as it recounts the maritime history of life from the Bronze Age to the present day. Also, take a look at the Agios Nikolaos church, a monastic religious building dating back to the 14th century, as well as the Janissary Mosque.

Konmari Boutique Suites offers an excellent location in the old town, near a bus station and historical monuments. This hotel provides very nice, stylish, and bright rooms starting at €62 per night. The staff is friendly, welcoming, and very warm-hearted!

Lidra Rooms is a family-run establishment with a great location near the Venetian harbor of Chania. For about €45 per night, you'll sleep in a beautifully decorated room. This accommodation is managed by a thoughtful and very welcoming host.

Rooms at El Greco Hotel are available starting at around €100 per night, breakfast included. For this price, you'll enjoy a modern room next to the Venetian harbor and just 500 meters from Nea Chora beach. This charmingly renovated hotel guarantees a fantastic stay in the heart of the center (but quiet, as it is very well soundproofed!).

Topanas and Evraiki are two neighborhoods located to the west of the old town of Chania. Historical, they are charming areas that attract travelers for their dynamic atmosphere. These are places that have managed to retain their authenticity, with typical restaurants and artisan shops.

If you're looking for lively vacations without overdoing it, you will be in the right place. You'll find various styles of accommodation for all budgets, often situated in beautiful character buildings. Here, you're sure to find a favorite establishment that meets all your expectations

The Topanas neighborhood offers a pleasant atmosphere, making it a great place to live. Located between the old harbor and the walls of the old town, it is full of picturesque alleys and renovated ancient buildings that exude charm. Of course, you'll come across many beautiful Venetian houses!

As for the Evraiki neighborhood, it is the Jewish quarter of Chania, a distinctive feature that can be observed by the presence of the Etz Hayyim synagogue, the only surviving remnant of the Jewish community. You will also see the old Venetian fortress Firka and the Trimartiri Cathedral, the protector of the city.

If you're still unsure where to sleep in Chania, these two neighborhoods benefit from an excellent central location. Very close to the harbor and the old town, you won't have difficulty getting around

Elia Palazzo Hotel offers comfortable and traditional rooms for a minimum of €97 per night, including breakfast. The establishment is located 300 meters from the old town and 150 meters from the harbor. The staff is charming, and the breakfast is delicious, making it an excellent address to remember!

The ELG Contessa Boutique Hotel is a beautiful establishment managed by friendly staff, located near the old town of Chania. This family-run property offers traditional rooms in a typical Cretan house dating back to 1800. Starting at €93 per night, you'll enjoy a lovely view of the harbor ️

Looking for a calm stay in Chania? If that's the vibe you're after for your vacation, I suggest two other neighborhoods that cater to this desire: Splanzia and Chionès. Both offer a relaxed atmosphere just a few minutes' walk from the old town of Chania.

Due to their proximity to the old town, these two neighborhoods also host a wide range of accommodations. Hotels, apartments for rent, guesthouses - there's truly something for everyone. No worries about budget; the prices are quite varied and suitable for all types of travelers.

The former Turkish neighborhood, Splanzia has preserved some signs from its past, such as the presence of a bell tower and a minaret from the Ottoman era belonging to the St. Nicholas church of Chania. This church was built in 1320 and was known back then as the Sovereign Mosque. During your stay, you'll have the opportunity to wander through the picturesque alleys of Splanzia and perhaps shop at the market!

Regarding the Chionès neighborhood, it is highly appreciated for its well-preserved Venetian arsenals and a replica of a Minoan ship. Nearby, you'll also find fortifications revealing an ancient guard post as well as the Saint Nicholas bastion of Molos and its iconic lighthouse.

Deluxe Suites is located 300 meters from the city center and 600 meters from Koum Kapi beach, and offers spacious, well-decorated, and very pleasant rooms. Conveniently located in Chania, you should expect to pay a minimum of €80 for a night in this establishment. An airport shuttle service is available upon request.

Located about 4 kilometers east of the old town of Chania, Halepa is a beautiful destination for a stay in Crete. Considered one of the most upscale towns in the area, it was once connected to Chania as the diplomatic center of Crete in the 19th century.

This town is known for its stunning villas and former consuls, including the family home of Elefthérios Venizélos, a politician regarded as the founder of modern Greece. This home has now been transformed into a museum showcasing his personal belongings, objects, documents, and even his car!

Among the interesting sites to visit in Halepa are the Agia Magdalini church, splendidly dominated by a dome inspired by Russian architecture, as well as the Gouverneto monastery, of Greek Orthodox origin.

Halepa is an excellent base if you're looking for a somewhat less touristy setting. It has a great selection of hotels with beautiful addresses. Nevertheless, Halepa remains a sought-after area by tourists, and establishments fill up quickly, so be sure to book in advance!

Rodon Hotel allows you to stay in an upscale setting for only €68 per night, including breakfast. The hotel offers a lovely view of the White Mountains and has 2 restaurants, a bar, a sun terrace, and free parking. A garden is available for you to relax!

Lagon Life Spirit Boutique Hotel offers an exclusive stay with luxurious 30 m2 suites, equipped with a private pool and furnished balcony. For one night, expect to pay starting from €167, with breakfast included. This hotel offers a gym, a bar, an outdoor pool, free parking, and an airport shuttle service.

Akrotiri Hotel is a family-run establishment managed by a caring owner. For €92 per night, you'll enjoy a pleasant breakfast and stay in a comfortable room with a sea view balcony. You'll stay in Halepa, just 50 meters from a bus stop to reach the airport.

If you decide to visit Crete between April and October, you will reap all the benefits! This is the best time to enjoy the beach, the sun, and to embark on lovely visits and strolls in Chania. Choosing spring and summer will grant you temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 degrees depending on your departure month ☀️

However, for travelers who are not fond of extreme heat or who wish to travel more cheaply to Crete, it would be preferable to plan a departure in early spring or fall. Prices are much more favorable and Chania will be far less crowded compared to the summer season. The temperatures are very pleasant with an average of 20 to 25 degrees.

Conversely, the summer season can be a good idea if you have a substantial budget and want to truly enjoy a summer vacation with warm weather and plenty of sunshine! But be careful, even if you have a good budget, I still recommend always booking your hotel room as soon as possible.

If you're wondering how to get to Chania, there are several options available:

The first is to fly, as there is an international airport located a few kilometers from the city. You should expect about a 3-hour direct flight from Paris, and about 5 hours if you make a stopover in Athens. Another option is to fly to Heraklion, about a 2-hour drive from Chania. Once there, I recommend renting a car in Crete to get to Chania

Lastly, you can choose a third option: land in Athens and take the ferry from the port of Piraeus. Expect about a 9-hour crossing.
