The History of the Alhambra in Grenada

The history of the Alhambra dates back to the 14th century, when Andalusia was under Arab-Muslim rule. We therefore find a blend of Hispano-Moorish art, which is very common in the region, and can also be seen in the Alcazar of Seville, for example.

  • The Alcazaba primarily served as a military fortress to house soldiers. From these high towers, warriors (and today's visitors) enjoy stunning views of the entire city and the surroundings in order to better anticipate attacks.
  • The Nasrid Palaces comprise a complex of buildings that were intended for court life during the Nasrid period. Many remarkable spaces can be admired here, such as the Machuca Tower, the Mexuar Hall, and the courtyard of the Golden Room. All the rooms are connected and open onto courtyards and gardens.
  • The Generalife was built for the Nasrid princes who made it their summer residence. That's why it has many shaded areas, beautiful gardens, and a few fountains. The palace is actually supplied with spring water from the mountains just behind.
  • The Palace of Charles V is a bit special because it was built later by the Castilians. After the victory over the Muslim empire, Emperor Charles V wanted a residence in Grenada. That's why he had this palace built in Renaissance style, which stands out from the rest of the complex.
