7 Series to Travel from Your Couch
Let's be honest: traveling is currently complicated! So to lift our spirits and stay connected to this world of discovery, to dream of future destinations while partly filling the void of travel... Here are some ideas for series to watch that will make you feel like you're traveling.
These are series I've watched and love, available on different platforms (Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime, YouTube). Of course, there are many others... And that's where you come in! I need your help and recommendations in the comments!
3 Ideas for Series to Travel
I will start with one section of series >, before taking you to discover other formats...
1. Game of Thrones
This series needs no introduction; it predicts the arrival of winter (though I'm more excited to see the return of sunny days!). I eagerly read all the books, and I loved immersing myself in this series (despite the differences in storylines).
Moreover, this series took us to Northern Ireland to some filming locations of Game of Thrones. It was magical! A trip I loved... So this series makes me dream of travel doubly!
2. His Dark Materials
I just finished reading all the existing books surrounding Lyra and the Golden Compass.. It's a universe that I had difficulty letting go! I've just started the HBO series (His Dark Materials), so I still need to get used to the characters. Throughout my readings, Ms. Coulter resembled Nicole Kidman (I loved the movie and have always regretted that it didn't get a sequel).
Anyway, it's a universe where the real and the magical intertwine, touching on themes of truth, courage, travel, and the soul... and then there's the concept of a daemon: I'm a fan!
This series takes us from Oxford to the Far North... and the landscapes are stunning.
3. Sense8
Not necessarily the first series that comes to mind when thinking of travel... and yet, the filming crew had to make some incredible trips to film from one end of the globe to the other!
Throughout its seasons, the series was filmed:
- in the USA: Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles
- in the UK: London, in Scotland at Argyll, Chippenham
- in Germany: Berlin
- in Korea: Seoul
- in Iceland: Reykjavik
- in Mexico: Mexico City
- in India: Nairobi and Bombay
- in the Netherlands: Amsterdam
- in Malta
- in Italy: Positano, Naples (Rione Sanità)
- in Brazil: São Paulo
- and finally in France: in Paris (Montmartre, Eiffel Tower)

I couldn't not mention this series... but I had to create a separate category for it!
Long Way Up
Our latest great travel series... Let me tell you, it was just as pleasurable as it was painful to watch. Seeing them on the roads we know so well... or the ones we should have discovered with our project Know Your Home that was abruptly cut short.
And on top of that, there's Ewan McGregor! (Yes, I've been a huge fan since I was a teenager, there, I said it!)
But with that, I haven't even told you about this series yet! Ewan and his best friend decided to travel across the Americas by motorcycle. This isn't their first rodeo. After going >, with a round-the-world trip, and then > from Europe to the tip of South Africa... Many years later, they said, never say never!
They set off from Ushuaia (memories of our Antarctic trip!) on electric motorcycles! They wanted to include an ethical and ecological dimension to their journey, and the electric aspect proved to be a real challenge on this adventure.
Through Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador... they make their way up South America back to Los Angeles.
There's humor, emotions, beautiful landscapes, and heartwarming moments (I cried like a baby when he told the story of adopting his daughter in Mongolia)... In short, it's beautiful travel.
3 Documentary Series for Traveling
1. Tales by Light - Land of Light
Land of Light is a Netflix documentary that invites us to follow a photographer in each episode. Each has their specialty, angle of approach, and geographical area of choice... It's varied, it makes you travel, it's deeply human... and it's beautiful!
Himalaya, Alaska, Antarctica, Ethiopia, New Guinea, Brazil, India, Kenya, Namibia, Australia, Bangladesh... are just some of the destinations waiting for you.
2. Our Planet (Netflix)
A documentary that reveals the beauty of our planet as well as the impact of climate change on the wildlife and flora that inhabit it.
From icy or sandy deserts to lush forests and deep waters, from micro to macro, this documentary takes us across different ecosystems of the globe for a fabulous journey.
But I must admit, I'm the type to have tears in my eyes (or even cry) in front of the animals filmed in distress... and also risk falling asleep to the deep voice of the narrator!
3. Night on Earth
A documentary with an original concept: to discover the lives of animals once the sun goes down. Cutting-edge technologies allow us to learn more about lion hunting and the flight of bats.
And since several of my favorite documentaries didn't fit into this article >, here are my favorites: read the article 4 Documentaries to Travel.
I chose to limit myself to this short list while offering you very different formats and styles. I hope to allow you to (re)discover some!
And of course, alongside the travel series, there are movies, books, anime, animated series and cartoons... I've already introduced you to some and soon I'll make a great compilation of ideas!
